Tooth Whitening – Dublin Dentist

Don’t Wear Yellow on Your Wedding Day

The only things you want to be yellow on your wedding day are the things planned to be yellow – the flowers, the bridesmaid dresses, the linens. One thing you definitely don’t want to be yellow? Your smile!

When you’re the center of attention on the happiest day your life, and thousands of pictures are being snapped by the hour, the last thing you want to draw attention to is a dull, dingy smile. A professional whitening at Pembroke Dental Ballsbridge in Dublin 4 can help!

Teeth Whitening from Pembroke Dental is your best option to get the dazzling smile you want in the fastest time, with longest lasting results, and without any unwanted side effects. Dr. Keenan will work with you to determine the ideal solution to get your smile its best white.

While some of our patients may think it’s easier and cheaper to whiten their smiles using over-the-counter products, we’d like to encourage a visit to us before choosing a smile whitening system. Some smile whitening options can actually damage your smile and can even lead to pain. And we don’t want our patients to experience any damage or pain when they’re preparing for their big event!

Many over-the-counter teeth whitening kits have trays or strips that contain the whitening solution. However, since these trays are not custom fitted, the solution can leak onto gums and cause irritation. Additionally, some over-the-counter whiteners can cause tooth sensitivity, and are sometimes ineffective at giving you your desired results.

What does tooth whitening involve?

Take-home tooth whitening usually requires two visits.  At the first appointment in our D4 dental practice,  Dr. Keenan will take impressions (moulds) will be made of your teeth to fabricate custom, clear plastic, trays.

At your second appointment, you will try on the trays for proper fit, and adjustments will be made if necessary.  The trays are worn with special whitening solution either twice a day for 30 minutes or overnight for a couple of weeks depending on the degree of staining and desired level of whitening.  It is normal to experience tooth sensitivity during the time you are whitening your teeth, but it will subside shortly after you have stopped bleaching.

You will receive care instructions for your teeth and trays, and be encouraged to visit Dr. Keenan regularly to help maintain a beautiful, healthy, white smile.

Teeth whitening cannot be completed in one office visit.  For this reason, custom trays worn at home are the best way to whiten your teeth.  Whitening teeth depends only upon the strength of whitening gel used, and the time it is on your teeth.  The custom trays with a strong whitening gel, work well, are cost effective, and safe.

Tray wear works and works well but you have to be disciplined enough to wear the trays for about 2 weeks.

Stroke

Recent research has suggested that gum disease in patients carries a potentially higher risk of having a stroke than diabetes and has almost the same impact as high blood pressure in causing them.

Whilst obesity and smoking are commonly associated with raising the risk of suffering a stroke, many people don’t know the risks associated with poor oral health. According to the International Dental Health Foundation ‘only one in six people realise that people with gum disease may have an increased risk of stroke’.

Basically, bacterial infections can cause the body to be at higher risk of developing a blood clot which in turn is what causes the higher risk of developing a stroke.

What can you do?

If preventing gum disease may lower your risk of having a stroke, isn’t it worth flossing and brushing regularly? You should also visit your dentist every six months for a full dental health check and a thorough cleaning of your teeth.

If you are experiencing any difficulties please contact us in our Dublin dentist practice today at 01 668 3242.

Stress

We live in very demanding times, and more and more people being diagnosed with stress with recent figures suggesting it affects up to 10- of the population. Whilst there is a general awareness of the majority of symptoms of stress many people do not realise the oral health implications.

In fact there are a high number of people I see who don’t realise the extent of their teeth clenching and grinding (bruxism). Headaches can be an immediate side effect of this grinding while permanent tooth damage can be a long term one. The majority of sufferers are aged between mid-twenties to mid-forties.

Although bruxism may be the most common stress related complaint, others include;

  • Mouth sores and cold sores
  • Poor oral hygiene/unhealthy eating routines
  • Periodontal disease
  • Prolonged grinding can lead to TMJ (Temporomandibular Joint) problems

What can you do?

If you are clenching or grinding we may recommend the use of a night guard which you pop in while you sleep and which will help to minimise the effects of the grinding. Underlying stress or anxiety may be treated with cognitive behavioural therapy.

If you are concerned that you have stress related bruxism, visit us for a dental health check which will include an inspection of your mouth and jaw. Please contact us in our Dublin dentist practice today at 01 668 3242.
